What’s the future for services the public depends on in our communities, and for the dedicated employees who provide those services?

What strategies should SEIU members adopt to learn from our past successes and anticipate the challenges we expect in the years ahead?

Those are crucial questions that thousands of SEIU members and leaders from dozens of public service locals have been grappling with for the past 18 months in an exciting and unprecedented process to develop our union’s vision and action plan for the coming years.

Our in-depth analysis revealed that we can expect:

    • a major impact from shifts to an older population more concentrated in nonunion southern and southwestern states,

    • more attempts by big corporations to take over public services, less voter support for public sector retirement and health plans as private sector workers lose theirs,

    • a loss of confidence in public employees’ unions as champions of quality,

    • and a shaky economy that will be used as an excuse to speed privatization and cuts in pensions.

SEIU members have shown many times that we can overcome challenges like these when we adopt innovative strategies and unite our strength and resources.  To prepare for our future in a changing world, we have developed a bold vision for where we want to be 20 years from now and a specific action plan we should implement together in the next four years to achieve our vision.
